
Direct School Admission (DSA)
Introduction
Nan Hua High School is an Autonomous Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school. Our vision is to be a SAP school of distinction that celebrates thinking, learning and each child’s potential and talent. Our mission is to nurture confident, creative and cultured students with a passion for learning.
In this Direct School Admission (DSA) Exercise, Nan Hua High School will be admitting students who possess special talents in one of the following:
·Chinese Calligraphy
·Sports (Athletics – boys & girls, Badminton – boys & girls, Basketball – boys, Netball - girls, Softball – girls, Table-Tennis – boys & girls and Volleyball – boys)
Selection Criteria
1. Attainment of at least Band 2 (70 marks) in at least 3 subjects in the Primary 6 (Mid-Year) School Examination of the applicant’s primary school AND offering Chinese Language as 1st or 2nd Language.)
2. Outstanding CCA (Co-Curricular Activities) achievements in any one of the listed CCA namely, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, Dance, Guzheng, Symphonic Band, Drama – Chinese/English, Chinese Calligraphy, Athletics – boys & girls, Badminton – boys & girls, Basketball – boys only, Netball – girls only, Softball – girls only, Table-Tennis – boys & girls and Volleyball – boys only.
3. Attainment at Music or Dance examination/s from ABRSM, RAD, Trinity College, NAFA, NUS Centre for the Arts, etc where applicable;
4. Please note that for musical CCAs (Chinese Orchestra, Guzheng Ensemble and Symphonic Band), it is essential that applicants are able to play the musical instrument(s) used by the groups (ie Ability to only play the piano, guitar or violin is not sufficient as these instruments are not offered in any of our CCA Groups).
5. Possession of other credentials related to the listed CCA
Application
1. All applications must be made on the prescribed Application Form that will be available for download from our school website from Monday 8 May 2017, and only those who satisfy the selection criteria need apply.
Application will begin on Monday 8 May 2017. The closing date for application is Tuesday 27 June 2017 (5.00pm). Late submissions will not be considered.

3. Applicants currently not studying in our national schools must obtain a CEN / REG Number from Ministry of Education Customer Service Centre (MOE CSC) before making their applications.
Note: Incomplete application forms or applications without the necessary supporting documents will not be considered. School operating hours will be from 7.00am to 5.00pm during the June Holidays.

Performing Arts
a.) Test on Sight-reading (not applicable to Dance) / Script-reading (Drama)

Drama-improvisation (own act) (not exceeding 1 minute)
Sports
a.) Test on relevant skills specific to the individual sports
a) On-the-spot calligraphy-writing
4. The final selection will take place before the end of August and applicants will receive a reply by 31 August 2017. Successful applicants will either receive a confirmed offer or be placed on the waiting list.
4b. Successful DSA-Sec students are also NOT allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Interested applicants currently studying in Government and Government-Aided Schools must complete an application form, accessible from our school website or obtainable from our General Office, and return the completed form to us by Tuesday 27 June 2017 (5.00pm).
Interested applicants currently not studying in our national schools should approach the Ministry of Education (MOE) Customer Service Centre for a CEN / REG Number before making the application to our school. A copy of the relevant document issued by MOE for the Registration Number must be submitted together with the application form.
To be short-listed, applicants should demonstrate the following:
Academic Performance:
Students from Government and Government-Aided Schools should have achieved at least a Band 2 (70 marks) for at least 3 subjects (English Language, Chinese Language, Mathematics and Science) in Primary 6 (Mid-Year) School Examination. Other pupils should be able to show equivalent academic attainment.
CCA Achievements:
Students from Government and Government-Aided Schools should have outstanding CCA achievements in either Chinese Orchestra, Choir, Dance, Guzheng, Symphonic Band, Drama – Chinese/English, Chinese Calligraphy, Athletics – boys & girls, Badminton – boys & girls, Basketball – boys only, Netball – girls only, Softball – girls only, Table-Tennis – boys & girls and Volleyball – boys only. Other students should be able to demonstrate equivalent achievements.
Special Skills (Performing Arts):
It will be helpful if students possess certificate(s) for practical skills from ABRSM, Trinity College, RAD, NADA, Centre of the Arts or other creditable examining boards in any of the following:
- A Symphonic Band instrument
- A Chinese Orchestra instrument
- Guzheng
- Singing
- Dance or Ballet
4. What do I need to do during audition?
At the audition, candidates’ level of proficiency will be assessed. They will first perform a prepared dance / piece of music or excerpts of it for not more than five minutes or perform an improvisation act of their own for not more than one minute, followed by a performance of an unprepared piece/unseen script and attend an interview.
At the selection, candidates’ level of proficiency for the specific sports will be assessed. They will also be required to attend an interview. Candidates are encouraged to bring their own relevant sports equipment (Eg: Badminton/Table Tennis rackets) as well as be dressed in appropriate sports attire.
Visual Arts
At the selection, candidates' level of proficiency will be assessed. They will be required to demonstrate their skills through on-the-spot art creation/calligraphy-writing on subjects to be decided by the tester. They will also be required to attend an interview.
Candidates should be appropriately attired for the audition or selection test.
